Chapter 7
Professor Moore greeted me with a smile when I called back at her office twenty minutes later, to return the key.
âAh, Miss Heston. Come in and take a seat.â She watched in wry amusement as I did do. âDid the review go well?â
âVery well, professor, thank you.â
âThen I may expect Mr. Dahl to be more punctual in future?â
I nodded. âHe was late because of time-wasting Penshaw passengers. Now his priorities are ⦠adjusted.â
She chuckled. âAnd there you are, with such a delightful way of putting it. We shall make a word smith of you yet.â
I suppose I must have looked doubtful because she smiled encouragingly. âBut you look as if you didnât believe me?â
âWell, Iâd prefer to rely on my own talents,â I said. âNot on whatever âmind stimulantâ was in that truffle. Which must have been stronger than you thought, by the way, or Iâd never have been so ⦠persuasive with Loke.â
Professor Moore chuckled. âMiss Heston, I have to tell you that the active ingredient in the confections was chocolate. That and a little friendly encouragement. Whatever you discovered inside yourself was already there.â The open box was still on her desk and she nudged it toward me again. âTheyâre quite delicious, arenât they? I buy them from the âCandy Caveâ in town. Do help yourself to another.â
âIâm not sure that I need to, now,â I said faintly.
âWell, youâre still at an age where you worry about your figure. A naive preoccupation, if you ask me.â Professor Moore followed her own advice, choosing a truffle from the box. âWhat passed between you and Mr. Dahl was due entirely to you and Mr. Dahl. I presume you have arranged to see him again?â She popped the chocolate into her mouth.
I spent a moment processing what sheâd told me. âYes,â I said at last. âAs we were saying goodbye, he asked for my phone number ⦠and whether he might be allowed to escort me to the Masquerade.â
âAnd you agreed. Of course you did; youâve decided to take him. How could you not?â
âTake him?â I felt confused. âNo, he asked to take me to the ball.â
Professor Moore smirked.
âAnyway, how did you knowââ I had the answer before Iâd even finished the question. At this point, I didnât even feel surprised. âPiet. I mean, Mr. Mason.â
âI think weâre all now on terms where you might feel free to refer to him as Piet when itâs just us,â she said. âAnd you surmise correctly. He does sometimes act as my eyes and ears. He does a lot of work for the Trust. He is, after all, the scion of one of our founding families.â
I looked at her blankly, not understanding what she was saying. Professor Moore raised an eyebrow. âA scion is a young shoot or twig, Miss Heston. When applied to a person it means âdescendantâ.â She steepled her fingers. âHere is an exercise for you: learn ten new words every day. Well enough so that you will recall their definitions in a yearâs time, not just for a day or two.
